BSSD – Sports and Activities Guidelines for Summer 2020

In conjunction with the 27 schools in the Greater KC Suburban Conference, both Blue Springs High School and Blue Springs South High School will have a two-phase re-opening of athletic facilities for use by activities groups and athletic squads. All published workouts and practices are OPTIONAL. Parents should decide how much of the schedule they will allow their students to participate in during the summer.

All students who attend summer workouts/practices will need to fill out a signed parent permission form before they will be allowed to participate! This will be required for ALL students, including those who have already turned 18.

PHASE I – June 15-26

Students will be allowed on campus in groups of 50 to begin conditioning and stretching workouts on the two main turf fields at each high school. Students who show any signs of illness, including a fever or any other flu-like symptoms, should not attend!

Students should plan to bring their own water bottles and towels for use as there will be no building access allowed. There will be no common drinking areas or use of school equipment. These first two weeks will be used for conditioning and stretching purposes only so that students will not be at increased risk for injury after a long period of inactivity.

A schedule of practices for all students, incoming freshmen through seniors, will be published on the high school websites:

Blue Springs High School – www.bswildcats.com

Blue Springs South High School – www.bssjaguars.com

PHASE II – starting Monday, June 29

Sports teams and activities groups will be allowed to start summer workouts and practices. While social distancing will be observed as much as possible, parents should understand that student-athletes will be allowed to compete in sport specific skills, including scrimmaging and normal sports-specific contact. Because of this, we will take the temperatures of all athletes upon arrival and prior to participation. We reserve the right to send students home if their temperature does not fall within normal range.

Disinfecting of inside spaces, including the gyms, weight rooms, and practice areas will be done both regularly and vigorously. For example, we will pay special attention to our weight room facilities. Disinfectant that kills all viruses will be used to wipe off weight benches and bars during workouts. After each group has used the weight room, coaches and custodians will do a complete disinfecting of the area and there will be a one-hour waiting period before the next group will be allowed to use the weight room.

Please note that we will also open the indoor pool facilities with limited schedules for our student-athletes at both the Blue Springs Aquatic Center and the new Blue Springs South Aquatic Center. The outdoor pool at the Blue Springs High School campus will remain closed for the summer of 2020.

MSHSAA has suspended all restrictions on practices and dead periods for the summer because of the shorter time frame teams will have to get ready for their fall seasons. Therefore, the BSSD will not observe its scheduled DEAD PERIOD from July 4-12. However, ALL practices and workouts are OPTIONAL. Families will be able to continue with any family vacations or plans as they arise. We ask that you communicate clearly with your student’s coaches and activity supervisors during this unusual time.

Again, please check for complete sports and activities schedules which will be published in the next several days on the two websites listed above. Please remind your student when attending these optional events that they are to observe social distancing whenever possible, especially when arriving at the school before workouts begin. In addition, they will need to bring their own personal water bottle and a towel if they need one.
