The boys soccer team continued their season last night falling to defending conference champions Lee’s Summit West 2-1 in a close match that showed a vast improvement in the team as a whole.
Head Coach Mike Palermo spoke on their performance last night saying, “although we fell short last night the guys showed they can compete with top teams…We have a system of play we have been working on a lot. When the boys run the system correctly we can compete.”
The first half of the game was held scoreless with excellent defense highlighted by senior Cullen Moore. After scoring two goals in the JV match, junior Michael Schnoor was added to the varsity roster and proceeded to continue his big day playing a large chunk of the first half and having a goal taken away on a very close offsides call.
Lee’s Summit West struck quickly with two early goals in the second half. The score held at 2-0 with not much happening until the final ten minutes. It was at this time the Wildcats were fouled inside the penalty box.
Cullen Moore, who had shown off his strong legs all night on defense lined up for the penalty kick. Moore launched the ball into the right corner, placing it nearly as perfect as one could. The Lee’s Summit West goalkeeper played it just as perfectly, however, guessing right and leaping out to knock it away from the goal with the tips of his fingers.
Jose Ramos added a goal for the Wildcats in the final few minutes, but it proved too little too late as the Titans took the victory.
The great performance put on by the team showed a step in the right direction for the boys with Palermo adding that they “will continue to improve as long as we stay disciplined and run our system.”
The boys continue their season tonight traveling to Truman High School.
